DisplaySearch’s Touch Panel Market Analysis Report for 2010

DisplaySearch has come out with a detailed report on the Touch Panel market based on its survey of over 190 suppliers of touch screen modules and related components, such as controlled ICs. The report comprises a comprehensive study of 21 applications of touch screen technology, delving into the 11 touch technology categories and 9 size categories.

Apart from the 2009 shipment and revenue details of companies surveyed, the report also includes market forecasts until the year 2016.

Based on their analysis, DisplaySearch has pegged revenue growth in 2016 at a Cumulative Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 18% from 2010. This means that touch screen module revenue is expected to grow to $ 14 billion by 2016 from $ 4.3 billion in 2009. According to Jennifer Colegrove, Director of Display Technologies at DisplaySearch, touch screen technology, which has pervaded the portable electronic device market consisting of mobile phones, media players, etc., is all set to penetrate the large size applications market over the years.

There are a dozen touch screen technologies available in the market. Of these, two most popular technologies based on revenues generated are the Resistive touch and Projected capacitive technologies. DisplaySearch forecasts Projected capacitive technology to outdo Resistive touch technology in terms of revenue as the former has gained popularity through its use in Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch. The In-cell touch technology meant for larger displays is also expected to grow to $600 million by 2016.

Based on the number of units employed, the report lists mobile phones as the biggest application of touch screens. Touch penetration is expected to increase in mini note/slate PCs, digital still cameras and camcorders after 2010. Touch screens are also entering new segments like e-readers and casino gaming.
