OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today launched the OV6211, the world's smallest global shutter sensor. Designed for applications such as notebooks, tablets, mobile phones, wearable electronics, gaming devices and security systems, the low-power OV6211 enables a host of functionalities, including gesture recognition, eye tracking, depth and motion detection, as well as biometrics.
The ultra-compact OV6211 is the industry's first global shutter sensor to capture 400 x 400 (square) resolution video at 120 frames per second (FPS), making it an ideal solution for a broad range of space-constrained machine and computer vision applications.
"The gesture recognition and touch-less sensing market is poised to grow dramatically. Industry reports are predicting double-digit CAGR from 2013 to 2020, at which point the market is expected to reach $20.04 billion[1]," said Pulin Desai, senior strategic marketing manager at OmniVision. "The OV6211's ultra-compact and low-power design allows it to bring gesture recognition and tracking functions to mobile and wearable devices. The OV6211 can also play a critical role in bringing object and motion detection functionality to advanced security systems. There are truly no other sensors available on the market today that can offer all these functionalities across such a wide range of applications."
The OV6211 features a 3-micron OmniPixel3-GS™ global shutter pixel. It is capable of capturing full resolution (400 x 400 pixels) video at 120 FPS, enabling smear-free black and white image capture in both landscape or portrait mode. The sensor features two low-power modes: light sensing mode and ultra-low power mode. In light sensing mode, the OV6211 wakes up from "sleep mode" only when a change in light has been detected. In ultra-low power mode, the sensor reduces resolution and frame rates to conserve additional power. These two features allow the sensor to be used in "always on" mode while consuming very little power.
The 1/10.5-inch OV6211 fits into an ultra-compact 3.2 x 3.2 mm chip-scale package (CSP3). The sensor is currently in volume production.
OmniVision will be hosting a series of private demonstrations of the OV6211 CameraChip sensor during ISC West 2014 in a suite at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas from April 2-4. To schedule a meeting please email [email protected].
