STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, the world's top MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) manufacturer, and the leading supplier of MEMS sensors for consumer and portable applications1, today launched the first iNEMO Design Challenge in Italy.
It is the first time ST is running an open competition for students and engineers in Italy to design innovative applications built around ST's award-winning2 iNEMO smart multi-sensor technology. Similar competitions have been successfully run in Asia. The iNEMO Design Challenge encourages contestants to leverage the wide range of sensing technologies that MEMS offers to create innovative ways of interaction among technology, life, and the environment, making our lives more convenient.
ST's iNEMO is a unique evaluation and development tool that offers up to 10 degrees of freedom, combining a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, 3-axis magnetometer and one pressure sensor managed by an STM32 microcontroller. Integrating multiple sensors with processing capabilities, the board enables leaps in functionality and performance in a wide variety of applications, including Gaming, Human Machine Interface, Robotics, Portable Navigation Devices, and Patient Monitoring.
"We are excited to announce the first edition of our iNEMO Design Challenge in Italy. Students and engineers in Italy deserve opportunities to design and implement their creative ideas and vision," said Fabio Pasolini, General Manager Motion MEMS Division, Analog, MEMS and Sensors Group, STMicroelectronics. "With about 1200 young engineers participating in the contests run in Asia, we have successfully inspired the next generation of innovators to build useful and valuable MEMS applications that can contribute to improving our daily lives. We are also pleased to see that the students' projects in Asia have been well recognized by our customers and partners."
The iNEMO Design Challenge (Twitter hashtag #iNEMOdc) will run in Italy in two stages: by the end of July contestants will be able to submit their design concepts. The best ideas and teams will then receive the iNEMO Discovery kits to implement their projects before end of the year. These will be evaluated for their functionality and practicality, implementation, creativity, presentation and final demonstration. The winners will be announced in first months 2015. Rules, deadlines and technical seminar calendar can be found in the digital magazine PEPITE that ST publishes in Italian for graduate and undergraduate students at www.pepite.info.
