Optellios, a leading optic fiber technology company in Newtown, has been awarded a funding of $660,000 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for instituting the fiber-optic system to verify the infrastructure of buried or underground systems such as water pipelines.
The project aspires to develop a sensing device which can equip extremely accurate information on the integrity of the pipeline. The sensor data helps in detecting the infrastructure malady quickly and easily providing safety to the pipelines and other systems.
The Optellios operations manager, George Zisk explained that the award provided by NIST will help in enrolling engineers and researchers for fabricating novel products for the betterment of the economic status. Zisk added that Optellios will manufacture an optic-fiber sensing system which works as an extended sensor in monitoring information about the area and the mode of temperature fluctuations in the environment over the entire range of pipelines. This continuous evaluation will aid workers for constant maintenance of the system restricting repairs and accidents.
