STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, has expanded its portfolio of environmental sensors with the introduction of the UVIS25, the world's first sensor to provide a direct digital output of the Ultraviolet Index (UVI), the international measurement of the strength of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, primarily from the sun, at a given place and time.

Exelis-Built Cross-Track Infrared Sounder Ready for Integration onto NOAA JPSS-1 Spacecraft

The Cross-Track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) built by Exelis in Fort Wayne, Indiana, shipped last week and is ready for integration onto the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1) spacecraft. The satellite is scheduled for launch in 2017.

Precipitation Radar on NASA-JAXA's TRMM Satellite Observes Eyewall of Tropical Cyclone Maria

At 11 p.m. local time (1324 UTC) on Feb. 19, 2015, the Precipitation Radar on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite observed the eyewall of Tropical Cyclone Maria in the Coral Sea. At that time, Marcia was rapidly intensifying to category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, a little more than 12 hours before an expected landfall in Queensland, Australia.

NASA Advances Sensor-Based Systems to Improve Detection of Potential Icing Hazards Near Airports

When ice accumulates on the surface of an aircraft during flight, it distorts the smooth flow of air necessary to stay aloft. The result is a reduction in lift, which can lead to stalls and crashes. Knowing about hazardous icing conditions in advance helps pilots, air traffic controllers and airline dispatchers navigate airplanes and passengers away from danger.
