MSU Researchers to Advance Sensors for Physical Status Inspection

The scientists at the Michigan State University are developing a creative sensing device that can determine the physical status of a person. The advanced device that operates wirelessly can be fixed to the upper arms, lower legs and the wrist. The accelerometers can monitor and log the motions and even determine the person’s mode of action.

According to Karin Pfeiffer, Department of Kinesiology, MSU, the data obtained from such devices can be deployed for resisting obesity in childhood. She explained that with the help of the device, social activities of the children can be traced, by monitoring the activities of children with others of the same group, wearing the device. The device also furnishes data on the number of kids who are active at a particular time in a group and the sensor even has the ability to warn a child by an alarm system, if he/she remains inactive for long period thus reminding them to be active, Pfeiffer remarked.
