A new update of Dxo Mark tests, which evaluate different performance features functioning in the image sensor of a camera, reveals that the Pentax K-5 scores 82, ranking sixth among all the different cameras on the Dx0 Lab’s lists. Its admirable dynamic range with a capacity to capture detailing in both the dark and light regions of an image was also one of the reasons for the sixth rank.

ISO 80 reveals the K-5’s Sony built sensor has a range of 14.1 exposure value With this score the K-5 outscores even cameras with bigger full frame sensors. However the Dxo’s tests only measure the sensor attributes and do not count the other equally important details such as lens and accessory choice, price, durability, data focus, user interface and performance.

Pentax’s flagship camera with a 16.3 mega pixel capacity, would also find competition in full frame category especially if price is not a criterion. Pentax also has solution for full-frame SLRs with frame size of 35mm film with its 645D camera with medium-format, which has already been introduced in Japan and would be released in the United States and Europe by the end of 2010. This camera sensor with a dimension of 44 x 33 mm has more light-capturing abilities, which are useful especially in low light conditions. But these larger sensors also cost more to manufacture, and need heavier camera bodies and lenses.
