Glass Windows with Sensors from Soladigm

Soladigm has announced a new glass product that utilizes sensors to instruct windows for adjusting light. The company has secured $30 million from private equity for the manufacturing of auto-tinting windows to be used in energy-efficient commercial buildings.

Auto-Tinting Window

The electrochromatic glass, manufactured by the company, has the ability to automatically tint when applied with electric charge. The glass product depends on sensors to identify the amounts of temperature and light. Accordingly, the windows will adjust to either block or allow light to minimize heat or glare. The usage of auto-tinting windows can save about 25% of energy for heating and cooling.

The company had also raised $44 million in loans as well as grants from the Mississippi state, to build a manufacturing unit for smart glass at its Olive facility. From the Department of Energy, Soladigm secured a research and development grant of $3.5 million, and a certain amount for the equipment purchase. Soladigm has scheduled to start operations in the Mississippi plant by 2011 end and commence shipping in 2012.
