Fastwave, L-3 Communications Partner to Develop Underwater Data Acquisition System

Developing on its OceanStar system, Fastwave has entered into collaboration with L-3 Communications to develop commercial solutions for a networked underwater data acquisition system (NUDAS) that is incorporated with the Iridium satellite system.

The applications are subsea infrastructure data acquisition, environmental and oceanographic monitoring.

The OceanStar system has used subsea sensors to offer near real-time data acquisition through the Iridium satellite system since 2007. Prominent offshore energy groups are using the OceanStar system for marine environmental monitoring, functioning at over 30 locations in the isolated, cyclone-prone tropical waters of northern Australia.

The subsurface system utilizes a thorough-water acoustic communications technology from L-3 among distributed sensor nodes. This sophisticated signaling technology is very effective in conditions such as adverse multipath shallow water and deep water.

The OceanStar system can house numerous sensor types based on the requirement of applications. The NUDAS set up utilizes two or more remote sensor nodes to correspond with the central access node. The system’s modular design offers extra nodes to be effortlessly included.

The central access node transmits the information to the sea surface from where the OceanStar system supplies the sensor readings through Iridium satellite telemetry and an internet-based data management system  across the world instantly.
