Fulcrum Biometrics declared the availability of FbF mobileOne, a fingerprint biometric device that can be integrated with the iPod touch.
The FbF mobileOne enjoys the distinction of being the first ever biometric solution that was designed for iOS that can be fitted into any generation of iPod touch. The fingerprint scanner taps the power for functioning from iPod touch; therefore, it becomes a portable and networkable biometric identification system. The scanner finds many applications in medical, law enforcement and government sectors.
The fingerprint scanner scores over conventional scanners by virtue of its compact size and battery life of over nine hours. The portability of the scanner makes it an apt solution for mobile identification requirements like biometric voter registration, law enforcement warrant searches and attendance system in construction sites. The FbF mobileOne meets the HIPAA standards, so it can be used for logical and physical security.
The silicon fingerprint module of the scanner is the TCEFC1 TouchChip from AuthenTec. When a finger is placed on the sensor, the silicon module transmits the FIPS-201/PIV certified images of the scanned fingerprints to the mobileOne’s App on the iPod; from here the image is sent for onboard processing and storage. The captured image after processing is either compared to a fingerprint database present on-board or it is transmitted to a remote host. The fingerprint scanner is connected to the Apple 30-pin connector on iPod. Mike Chaudoin, the director of Government and Access Control marketing at AuthenTec, stated that the TCEFC1 chip was designed to suit mobile applications. He added that the chip is capable of warding off the effect of strong light that tends to bring down the quality of fingerprint images.
