An aquarium needs several tools, out of which one important tool is the thermometer to keep track of the temperature of the water at all times. Even the slightest variation in temperature could prove to be harmful to the fish in the aquarium.
However, the thermometer is one of the cheapest tools needed for an aquarium. There is a choice of five different types of thermometers, of which the floating aquarium thermometer is the most commonly used tool in small aquariums. The thermometer is made up of a lightweight material and is highly buoyant. It could be attached to the tank with the help of a suction cup or it could be allowed to just float around the tank. Even though these thermometers are popular, they have a short temperature range and can be hard to read or sometimes they just stop floating to all the areas within the tank and hence are not very accurate.
The latest in the thermometers are the remote digital sensors, which are capable of measuring the heat with the help of a digital timer that indicate high or low temperature ranges. This probe can be hung in the tank and the digital screen can be positioned at a place where it could be easily seen. It could be placed up to a distance of 3 ft from the tank and can still function accurately.
Stainless steel thermometers, which have a bubble action similar to the glass tube type thermometers, are also available. They could be hung inside the tank from a stainless steel mount. These thermometers can be accessed inside the reservoir and are very durable and easy to read.
There is also the standing thermometer, which as the name suggests could stand upright on the tank’s bottom. However, this thermometer could sometimes prove to be both hard to locate and read. One more type of thermometers available is the hydrometer, which would give the gravity or salinity of the water. As this is a multi-functioning tool, it is a great choice for using in aquariums.
