Maxim Integrated Products has added to its range of analog / mixed signal semiconductors, the MAX17497.
Maxim has introduced the one-chip solution for power requirements on the metrology and communications boards present in smart meters. With advanced integration which has added flexibility, improved reliability and accuracy and reduced the footprint and solution cost, the MAX17497 power regulator has been designed for factory automation and smart grid / smart meter applications.
Energy providers and utility companies require economical and compact alternatives to the external regulators available for smart meters applications, which are usually accomplished by integrating high voltage FETs and flyback controllers. The MAX17497 is an optimized multi-output solution designed exclusively for smart meters and is capable of supporting its power supply requirements. The regulator device integrates the desired control circuitry for an input of 85V to 265V and introduces a secondary synchronous buck regulator integrated with MOSFETs.
Operational in a temperature range between -40°C and 125° C and at 250 / 500 kHz, the MAX17497 improves overall system accuracy, reliability and provides design flexibility. Its flyback regulator is capable of mitigating frequency interference by avoiding the frequencies with the smart meter while the buck regulator frequency optimizes the filter and magnetic components. User defined features that include the overvoltage thresholds and the undervoltage lockout are programmable. Furthermore, the MAX17497 enhances system reliability with its protection features such as short-circuit and over-temperature protection features.
