OrthoSensor Receives Two Patents for Ultrasonic Alignment and Post-Operative Pain Inhibition

OrthoSensor, the developer of sensor-assisted surgery systems and intelligent orthopedic implants based in Sunrise, Florida, has announced that its intelligent orthopedic surgical platform has received two more patents from the US Patent Office.

The two new patents, 8,099,168 titled ‘Post-operative pain inhibitor for joint replacement and method thereof’ and 8,098,544 titled ‘Method and system for enhancing accuracy in ultrasonic alignment’ relate to post-operative pain inhibition and ultrasonic alignment.

The CEO of OrthoSensor, Jay Pierce stated that the company is a pioneer in intelligent orthopedics and the growing patent base strengthens the intellectual property in ultrasonic alignment and supports the development of intelligent implants.

The field of intelligent orthopedics aims at improving healthcare and reducing the treatment costs of musculoskeletal diseases by integrating microelectronics and sensors with wireless communications and developing sensor embedded products capable of transforming spine and joint arthroplasty procedures through evidence based analytics and intelligent implants.

Revision surgery linked to spine and total joint replacement surgeries are driven by complications associated with mal-alignment, improper orthopedic implant positioning and balancing. By 2015, it is estimated that the US hospital costs associated with total joint replacement revision surgery will likely reach $8.6 billion. The low-cost, intelligent devices developed by OrthoSensor can provide orthopedic surgeons intra-operative and post-operative feedback on mechanical alignment and soft tissue balancing in real-time, thereby improving both economic and clinical outcomes. OrthoSensor’s technology platforms integrate application specific integrated circuitry and sensor electronics.
