Abbott has introduced its new FreeStyle InsuLinx Blood Glucose Monitoring System in Canada.
The device features a mealtime (rapid-acting) insulin calculator, which suggests the required insulin doses. The system has a host of user-friendly features including a touch screen interface, personalization, an automated logbook and USB connectivity.
Surveys have revealed that determining the correct mealtime insulin dose has been difficult for patients. Around 40% of patients face difficulty when calculating their dose. Health care professionals state that when patients are not able to manage their dosage it will limit the complexity of the prescribed therapy. Further, inappropriate dosage can lead to hypoglycemia and other negative conditions. When patients fear hypoglycemia, it may make them to hesitate in making adjustments to their mealtime insulin dosage. This product may help diabetics prevent errors in dosage and allow them to self adjust their dosage.
The personalization preferences in the device include pre- and post-meal markers and weekly messages. Photographs can be uploaded to the monitor. Abbot provides FreeStyle Auto-Assist software for the device, which enables compatibility with both Macs and PCs. It also provides messages, reminders and reports.
The FreeStyle Lite blood glucose test strips with ZipWik tabs are compatible with the new monitoring system. It allows easy application of blood enabling a better experience for the users. The device is available at certain Canadian pharmacies and in diabetes centers.
