Giumarra Reedley is reporting promising results from the installation of PureSense Soil Moisture Monitoring Systems for irrigating stone fruit trees spanning 80 acres.
Giumarra Reedley is a part of the Giumarra Companies, which is a global network of growers, distributors, and marketers. PureSense provides real-time irrigation intelligence through decision support tools, and remote monitoring and control.
Field Monitoring Stations from PureSense were installed in the Giumarra Reedley orchard, which induced the trees to grow 8”-14” taller and the tree roots to grow 12” deeper.
Giumarra Reedley’s Special Projects and Quality Control Advisor, Jim Krause stated that the company did not achieve the desired yield in the past, but was hopeful of achieving the yield targets and the desired size and quality through the implementation of PureSense irrigation management systems.
The PureSense solutions allow growers to see the location where the water penetrates into the root zone. This will indicate the optimum timing for fertigation and irrigation. The solution enables users to manage the amount of nutrients and water, which has led to more frequent and shorter irrigation sets.
Over-irrigation as well as little or mistimed irrigation can lead to decrease in crop yield. The PureSense solution consists of a mini field computer that is connected to PureSense servers. The field data is stored and relayed. The soil temperature, salinity and moisture are continuously documented through soil-monitoring probes. The solution includes a weather station that records solar radiation, rainfall, wind direction and speed, humidity and temperature.
Growers can assess the field condition through software on their laptops or smart phones. The PureSense solution will help growers maintain the optimum moisture zone to get a better yield.
