Lattice Semiconductor in collaboration with Aptina, a CMOS imaging solutions provider, announced that the a multiple camera stereo design will be showcased at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show from 10 to 13 January at Las Vegas.
The dual image low-cost solution uses two 720p digital image sensors developed by Aptina, the MT9M034 and the MT9M024. The images are then combined into a single bus which is processed by the image signal processor (ISP). The generated output is used for implementing multi-camera applications or three dimensional stereoscopic videos.
The low cost enables use in consumer applications such as surround view cameras and automotive black box recorders. A reconfigurable Lattice MachX02 programmable logic device (PLD) receives the information from the two image sensors and utilizes an SDRAM chip for frame buffering providing a combined image output for the ISP bus.
Aptina’s Senior Segment - Business Development Manager, Cliff Cheng, explained that the collaboration with Lattice Semiconductor has proved fruitful since the use of Lattice’s HiSPi protocol provides the opportunity for expanding the reach of Aptina’s HD WDR sensors used in 3D depth sensing and smart cameras.
The Director of Business of Lattice Semiconductor, Ted Marena stated that the dual image camera sensor design allows ISP providers to offer multiple camera solutions faster. Marena also added that to further reduce the cost factor; the company used the HiSPi bus of the digital image sensors to use a smaller I/O package for the MachX02 device.
